The next IT challenges for railways: Internet of Transportation Things, Big Data, Artificial Intelligence

The digitalisation of railways is in progress and is going to have a strong impact on the structure and business of the railway sector.

In the meantime, new challenges appear which should be tackled in order to avoid that railways miss important opportunities for innovation.

The large availability of low-power high-performance sensors, actuators and controllers (often wirelessly linked together) will allow more detailed monitoring and control of railway assets, boosting the collection of large amounts of data, which will need to be analysed by means of powerful tools and new applications, taking advantage of advanced technologies, including artificial intelligence.
